Beaver Island and Charlevoix
Thursday and Friday, July 20 – 21
Here is another great island adventure that is hopefully on your bucket list. Beaver Island is the largest island in Lake Michigan and it has 3 eras of unique history: Native Americans, Mormons, and Irish. It is the only place in the USA that had a king! We will travel up to Charlevoix and stay the night there, enjoying this gorgeous town, seeing some of the famous mushroom houses and visiting Castle Farms, built in 1918 by Albert Loeb, president of Sears, Roebuck & Co., a unique farm with stone towers and fragrant gardens, modeled after castles found in Normandy, France. We will have a lunch buffet at Castle Farms, then we will hop a tram to go to exterior gardens and see property highlights, then we will have a guided tour of the castle, and you will see photos of the castle’s construction, farm years, and restoration. There are 8 gardens to experience and the largest model railroad in the state. The next morning, we take the ferry to Beaver Island. There, we will have a guided tour around the northern island as we learn of its history, natural features, and see the lighthouse. This is museum week on the island so there will be music, presentations on nature and Native American culture, an art show and of course, much ado about Mormon King Strang.
Registration Deadline: June 21
