Join us on Saturday, June 9 at 4 p.m. for the dedication of a Michigan Historical Marker for historic Tawas Point Lighthouse at Tawas Point State Park. The marker will be officially presented by a member of the Michigan Historical Commission. The Friends of Tawas Point Lighthouse and State Park, Michigan DNR, and Tawas community leaders will also participate.
The Friends of Tawas Point made application to the Michigan History Center and dedicated funds for the historical marker in 2016. They also collaborated with the History Center on the text. The marker will tell the story of our 142 year old lighthouse and its significance in Michigan maritime history.
Vernors Ginger Ale floats will be a part of the celebration to commemorate the selection of Tawas Point Lighthouse in the first teaming of the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group and Pure Michigan campaign to release limited-edition cans of the popular ginger ale that featured five of Michigan’s lighthouses. (Besides our Tawas Point Lighthouse, the others included in the campaign were Big Sable Point, Crisp Point, Eagle Harbor, and Grand Haven.)
Please note: Although there is no fee to attend the event, since you need to gain admittance to Tawas Point State Park, your vehicle will need a valid Recreation Passport to enter. The Michigan DNR Recreation Passport replaces the state parks sticker to get you into all state parks, state recreation areas and state boat launches – a great investment….for more details, please check out the Michigan DNR Recreation Passport on line or at your local Secretary of State office.
