After winding it's way from Grayling in the center of the State, the famous AuSable River reaches it's destination in Lake Huron at Oscoda, just north of Tawas Bay. Right below the last of the Consumers Power dams, at the village of Footesite, the river again flows free. From this point to the mouth of the river, kayaking and canoeing are popular activities. Kayaks and canoes can be rented from AuSable River Kayaking, Alcona Canoes, and Oscoda Canoe Rental for a trip of several hours or all day. If you are really up for a challenge, overnight trips of 2 to 7 days can also be arranged, with departures at locations all the way upriver to Grayling. In mid-summer each year, the AuSable River Canoe Marathon takes place with the finish line in nearby Oscoda. The race is billed as the longest non-stop canoe race in North America, lasting over 14 hours and covering 120 miles.
