For the boating enthusiast, a wide variety of water conditions can be found, ranging from 'open water' sailing and windsurfing on Lake Huron, to the more sheltered conditions in Tawas Bay.
The Tawas Bay Yacht Club, located near the State Park on Tawas Point, sponsors racing events throughout the summer season, with sailors from all over the world competing.
The East Tawas State Dock, located at the foot of Newman Street in East Tawas, provides sheltered anchorage (and some pretty fair fishing too) while several private marinas provide additional dockage, fuel and service.
For others, the many inland lakes and rivers, as well as the sheltered waters of Tawas Bay, provide excellent opportunities for smaller boats. The backwaters of the Consumers Power dams on the AuSable River provide scenic calm waters to enjoy exploring the many bays and inlets.
Canoeing is also a popular activity on the AuSable River and canoes can be rented at Alcona Canoes, and Oscoda Canoe Rental. Canoeists can select the length of the trip from a few hours to all day. Overnight trips from 2 to 7 days can also be arranged.
