Camping and picnicking are popular pastimes here. There are a number of local campgrounds, operated by Federal, State and local governments and by private operators which offer overnight or extended camping. Sites ranging from 'rustic' to fully equipped are usually available (we do recommend you call for reservations when possible).
The Huron National Forest provides numerous primitive campsites along the shores and on the islands in the backwaters of the Consumers Power dams on the AuSable River. The forest also has 8 more developed camping areas.
The Tawas Point State Park provides modern camping facilities right on the warm waters of Tawas Bay, with 195 sites available.
Multiple day parks are located on Tawas Bay, the AuSable river, Lake Huron, and inland lakes for an afternoon of picnicking, swimming and other recreational activities.
