Tawas Bay is unique in its location midway between the cool waters of northern Lake Huron and the warm waters of Saginaw Bay. Therefore, a mixed assortment of fish is no surprise. Catches of brown trout, salmon, lake trout and walleye are frequently taken on the same trip. You may launch your own boat and fish the Nurnburg Reef for some of the nearly one million walleyes grown and planted by Walleyes for Iosco County, the DNR and Fish America Foundation, or ply the shores along Tawas Point for huge northern pike and, of course, those mouthwatering perch! Plan on taking the family or friends on a quality charter for an enjoyable day on the beautiful, clear blue waters of Lake Huron and Tawas Bay.

The Tawas River kicks off the season with a fine April steelhead run, closely followed by smelt and an abundance of walleyes. During mid-summer, the river is a popular site for perch fishing. Located at the headwaters of the river, Tawas Lake is well populated with walleye, bass, pike and panfish. The Tawas Lake DNR Public Access site is the best location to enter the popular inland lake. In mid-November, the whitefish and menominee move into the Bay for several weeks of hot fishing action from the East Tawas State Dock.

If winter fishing is your sport, the ice on Tawas Bay provides good fishing for perch, walleyes and pike. The many nearby inland lakes provide perch, bluegill, crappie and pike in abundance. The AuSable is the place for winter steelhead fishing in the open water of the river below Foote Dam.

A memorable drive into the neighboring Huron National Forest will satisfy the outdoorsman who dreams of pristine waters and wild trout. The wild and scenic section of the famous AuSable River offers spectacular scenery, wilderness seclusion, and enough brown and rainbow trout to cause any angler to fumble knots. Several lesser- known streams offer great opportunities for native brook trout.
